Dr. Abhay Bang
Director
SEARCH
Dr. Abhay Bang is not just a doctor, he is a man who gave his life to people who had no one else. At a time when he could have chosen comfort, recognition, and a global career, he chose something far more meaningful: to live among the underserved, to heal them, and to stand by them, expecting nothing in return.
A gold medalist and top-ranking medical graduate in India, with further training in public health from Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Bang made a life-defining choice in 1985. Along with his wife, Dr. Rani Bang, he founded SEARCH (Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health) in Gadchiroli, one of India’s most underdeveloped tribal districts. There, they built a revolutionary model of community-based healthcare across 150 villages, proving that world-class healthcare solutions can emerge from the grassroots.
For decades, he has lived and worked with the community, not as an outsider, but as one of them. Through SEARCH (Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health), he built a model of healthcare rooted in dignity, trust, and human connection, reaching over 150 villages. His work was never about recognition; it was about ensuring that no mother loses her child, no woman suffers in silence, and no life is left behind simply because of where it was born.
His pioneering research published in The Lancet changed global understanding of rural health, from exposing the hidden suffering of women to proving that newborn lives can be saved through simple, community-based care. His home-based newborn care model has since reached millions, dramatically reducing infant mortality and giving countless families a chance at hope.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Bang has led powerful social movements, advocating for alcohol prohibition, reducing tobacco use, and championing tribal health rights. His leadership has influenced national policies and reshaped how healthcare is delivered to marginalized populations.
His extraordinary contributions have earned him some of the world’s most prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri by the Government of India, WHO’s Public Health Champion Award, the Global Health Hero recognition by TIME magazine, and the Goalkeeper Champion Award by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Yet, his greatest achievement remains the trust and lives of the communities he continues to serve.
With over 60 research publications, global lectures at leading institutions like Harvard and Stanford, and decades of relentless service, Dr. Abhay Bang stands as a living example of what it truly means to practice medicine with purpose, humility, and heart.
